Paris/Washington: French President Emmanuel Macron has appealed for coordinated efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions between the US and Iran. He clearly said that diplomatic coordination is necessary instead of military steps to open this important sea route, especially when America is working on a plan to safely evacuate the ships under “Project Freedom”.

What is 'Project Freedom' and why has the stir increased?

America has started a campaign named “Project Freedom”, the objective of which is to safely rescue the ships stuck in this important sea route. The American side is calling it a security related step, but Iran has called it a provocative action. This is the reason why the situation has become more sensitive.

What is Macron trying to say?

Macron has clearly said that such issues will not be resolved through military force but through dialogue. He indicated that France would not support any unilateral military action and would prefer a diplomatic solution. According to him, only direct dialogue between America and Iran can avert this crisis.

How tough is Iran's stance?

Iran has clearly warned that if external military forces interfere in the Strait of Hormuz, it will respond. Tehran says that the security of this waterway is its responsibility and any kind of external interference will not be accepted.

What warning did Donald Trump give?

Amidst the possibilities of diplomacy, the shadow of military strictness on the situation is also clearly visible. US President Donald Trump has warned that any attempt to hinder “Project Freedom” will be given a strong response. He also indicated that any blockage in a vital sea route like the Strait of Hormuz could have a serious impact on global energy supplies and trade.

Why is this sea route so important?

The Strait of Hormuz is counted among the busiest and strategic sea routes in the world. The oil supply passing through here is directly linked to the economy of many countries. If tension increases here, its effect is visible from oil prices to the global market.

Could the crisis escalate further?

The situation still remains delicate. On one hand, America is moving forward on military option to open this route, while on the other hand, countries like France are insisting on diplomatic solution. In such a situation, it will be clear in the coming days whether this crisis will be resolved through talks or the conflict will escalate further.
